Introducing Matia: The story behind our Unified DataOps Platform and $10.5M funding

Matia announces $10.5 million in funding for its unified dataops platform. Here's the story behind how we got here
Benjamin Segal, Co-Founder & CEO

Today, I couldn’t be more excited to announce that Matia is emerging from stealth with $10.5 Million in funding to build a unified DataOps platform. We’re bringing together the power of Ingestion, Reverse ETL, Observability and Catalog into one, powerful platform to help fulfill our mission of redefining how businesses interact with data.

Simply put, data teams have a hard job. In most organizations, they are using more than 7 different tools to manage their data and build their pipelines. Matia helps reduce their tech stack bloat, and maintain (and even enhance) the functionality data teams would get from point solutions. We do this while still making sure to integrate with the essential data infrastructure  and transformation tools you use everyday such as Snowflake, Databricks, dbt and hundreds of others.

Your Eyes. The Genesis of Matia

In 2022, I was chief of staff and head of data at Pangaea, a $100M+ CPG company. The organization relied on data to power their customer acquisition, communication and order fulfillment - essentially, it's what powered the business. I had a team of brilliant engineers data engineers, but they were spending most of their time building data pipelines, maintaining these pipelines, and fixing errors and outages. We brought in tool after tool to help, but we found that they were spending most of their time integrating these tools, and still didn’t have full visibility in one platform.

My brother, Geva, also faced similar challenges. He led an engineering team at Synamedia, focused on cybersecurity challenges. We would talk about this weekly and try to find a solution. We both managed different teams with different skill sets, but faced the same problem with our data tooling and operations.  There had to be a better way - a platform that allowed for deeper control of your data without the bloat: bidirectional syncs and observability in one place, and the ability to serve the broader business and understand your data lineage with catalog.

So we did some research. We talked to 36 data leaders in 20 days, and asked them how they solved this. Each of them said they used multiple tools, and would welcome one comprehensive dataops platform. While there were other data platforms, they felt if they moved from a point solution, they would give up reliability and sacrifice customizability and control.

And the idea of Matia was born. One Unified platform for your data needs that enables – instead of limits – reliability and control.

Matia means eyes in greek, and as your unified dataOps platform,we plan to be the ‘eyes’ for your data team.

Building Matia: Shifting Observability Left

We wrote our first production line of code in 2023 and continued to iterate. Everyday, we talked to potential data leaders, built connectors and more product, and dove into what the market was offering. We hired our first engineer, and then we got our first customer…and our second. And things grew from there.

We didn’t intend to ‘sell’ that early, but we were grateful that data leaders were sharing it with one another. Soon companies including Ramp, Honeybook, Obligo and dozens of others had signed up. And we continued to build.

While I know everyone is encouraging ‘building in public’ in today’s market, we choose to do things a bit differently after talking with data leaders. It wasn’t because we wanted to be secret about our product or keep it gated - it’s because we spoke to over 100 data leaders and they told us that what they needed was not only a reliable system, but one with observability as part of its foundation, not an afterthought. They wanted something that enabled them to detect anomalies and take action earlier in the data lifecycle. So we wanted to make sure we didn’t ‘launch’ until observability capabilities were natively in the platform.

Today, our platform includes ingestion, reverse ETL, and observability platform, and an initial version of Catalog . We built Matia to embed deeply with dbt, allowing for seamless transformation and observability of those transformations. By integrating observability natively into your platforms, Matia is able to shift observability left -  natively detect anomalies earlier in your data pipelines and stop downstream impacts.

I couldn’t be more grateful to the investors that got us here: Our round was led by Leaders Fund & Secret Chord Ventures, with Cerca Partners & Caffeinated Capital joining the round, along with numerous angels. They have been instrumental in helping us cement our strategy and connect us with key customers.

I also wanted to thank our team in North America and Israel. I am amazed at how quickly they can move and innovate, and release new product, and couldn’t be more excited to see where this journey takes us.

Your AI Strategy is a Data Strategy

We’ve gotten this far without talking about AI, and that’s intentional. AI isn’t simply something that’s baked into Matia as an afterthought.

“There is no such thing as an AI strategy without a data strategy”

The other day, this was what Snowflake CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy shared on Linkedin. At the center of every organization’s AI strategy is a conversation about data integrity and quality.

When data is done right, it is the foundation for your AI strategy. A reliable observability platform, as well as the culture and strategy to leverage these platforms correctly, is one of the cornerstones of AI strategy.  You need the right to make sure you are sending the right inputs to your platforms to create your Gen AI Models.

We’ve got a lot in store to make it even more seamless for organizations to build and maintain their data infrastructure on our roadmap, and cannot wait to share it.

What’s Next? The Future with Matia

We see a future where Matia becomes the data control and collaboration center for organizations of all sizes - enabling them to move quicker, and have more control over their data.

In order to achieve this vision, we will be scaling the teams in both Israel and North America. Please check out our open roles and reach out.

This is just the beginning and I'm looking forward to every phase of this journey.
